Tania and I woke up early this morning and we were greeted by yet another amazing day. The sun was out, the birds were singing and I was feeling wonderful. We had our morning cup of coffee and sat planning our day as we always do. At the moment Tania’s sister and her two girls are down and it is school holiday for our kids so another beach day for the children was on the cards. As I started getting ready for work a thought came to mind. “Why don’t you take the morning off and spend it with the family on the beach.” These thoughts happen to us all the time, the difference is today I listened and acted in a way that is not my normal disciplined self. We preach crAzy always wins and today was my day to do something crAzy. At 7 am I made the call to take the morning off work, Tania decided to do the same and the decision was made.
Just like that, I swapped my work pants for a pair of board shorts, went downstairs and started prepping for a day at the beach. By 8 am instead of sitting at the office I was driving down to the beach. We had 2 cars, 5 kids, 3 adults and the morning to do as we pleased. Tania left the beach around 11 am and the rest of us left just after 12. Both Tania and I have spent the remainder of the day at the office and managed to get through the work that needed to be done.
The lesson is simple. We are told time and again that time is our most precious commodity, yet we are not always conscious of how we spend it. The world did not stop because we took an unplanned morning off work. Yes, Tania and I both work for ourselves and we dictate our own hours to a large degree. Today I chose my children and family over a day at the office. I am blessed that I am able to do so. But as I sit here after work and write this I am reminded about all the other choices I get to make everyday and wonder what the outcome would be if I chose what I really wanted to do instead of what I thought I had to do…………….
